CHAG SAMEACH FROM JERUSALEM
There is a special minhag in Jerusalem that on the night of Shavuot, the anniversary of receiving the Torah, thousands of Jews walk to the Kotel in the early morning hours. It is very emotional and inspiring to see all the streets of the Old City streaming with people, dressed in festive garments and headed in one direction – to the Kotel. There are opportunities to learn Torah, recite tehillim or just be part of the festive crowd, followed by taking part in the morning services as dawn breaks over the Temple Mount.
All through the day, crowds of people continue to pour into the Old City. Torah classes are available in all languages, and you visit and pray in the many ancient synagogues in the Old City, including the newly reconstructed Churva shul. Because Jerusalem is the heart and center of the Jewish nation, there can be surprise encounters with people you haven’t seen in years.
